More Than a Fitness Test: Why Equity Must Be at the Center of Health Policy

A recent proposal from the current administration calls for reinstating the Presidential Fitness Test—a nostalgic throwback for some, but for many, a missed opportunity to address the true drivers of health.

In a recent MSNBC appearance, Dr. Uché Blackstock, Founder and CEO of Advancing Health Equity, emphasized that focusing on physical fitness alone ignores the deep systemic inequities that impact health outcomes—especially for Black and Brown children.

“Health isn’t just about individual behavior. It’s about whether families have access to nutritious food, clean air, safe schools, and quality care,” said Dr. Blackstock. “We need policies that create real pathways to health, not distractions that ignore root causes.”

At Advancing Health Equity, we help organizations embed equity into the fabric of their leadership, strategy, and care delivery. The health of our children—and our future—depends on bold, systemic solutions.
